Animal Crossing: New Horizons is getting a fresh wave of content. Nintendo has released a free 3.0 update for the original Switch version and introduced a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with platform‑specific enhancements. The rollout was announced on January 15, 2026, and focuses on quality‑of‑life changes, creative tools, and expanded online play. Below – what’s new, what’s different, and why it matters if you’re returning to your island or starting anew.

The 3.0 patch adds systems that reduce friction and expand how you experiment with island design. Several features are aimed at long‑time players who want to refresh a cluttered island or prototype bold ideas without touching their main save.

Kapp’n’s family hotel – build rooms, earn tickets, get souvenirs

A new hotel hub arrives at the dock. Help Kapp’n’s crew by designing themed rooms for guests. Completing hotel rooms – and certain Tom Nook DIY tasks – earns hotel tickets that can be exchanged in a souvenir shop for new items tied to the feature.

Convenience upgrades – bigger storage and a cleanup crew

Home storage can now be upgraded two more times, pushing the capacity to a maximum of 9000. You can also place trees, shrubs, and flowers in storage, smoothing large landscaping projects.

Resetti offers a new cleanup service: he can tidy specific areas or the entire island. Flowers and custom designs cleaned by the service can be routed directly to your storage, speeding seasonal resets or full redesigns.

Slumber Islands – prototype up to three dream builds

With a Nintendo Switch Online membership, players can create up to three Slumber Islands that are separate from the main island. These dream spaces allow full terraforming, building, and decorating using previously obtained items – without risking your primary layout.

Friends can visit online, or you can co‑create on their Slumber Islands – a low‑stakes way to iterate together before committing ideas to your main save.

New collaborations – fresh decor to collect

The update also introduces new collaboration items, including LEGO‑themed decor and retro Nintendo collectibles, expanding options for themed rooms and island motifs.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition – visual polish, faster decorating, bigger sessions

The new platform‑specific edition brings several exclusive enhancements that lean into the Switch 2 hardware for smoother building and more social play.

  • Enhanced resolution – sharper image quality on Switch 2 hardware.
  • Mouse control support – faster, more precise decorating and placement.
  • Megaphone integration – call your animal residents using the system’s built‑in microphone.
  • 12‑player online sessions – share your island in expanded gatherings when everyone uses the Switch 2 Edition.
  • CameraPlay and GameChat – see and hear friends’ reactions in real time; video features require a compatible USB camera.

Online functionality requires internet and a Nintendo Account. Nintendo notes that GameChat can be used without a Nintendo Switch Online membership until March 31, 2026; after that date, a membership will be required to continue using GameChat. Existing owners can opt for a paid upgrade to access the Switch 2 Edition features.

Final checkpoint – why this matters

The free 3.0 update lowers the cost of experimentation – bigger storage, an island‑wide cleanup, and Slumber Islands encourage bolder designs without risking your main save. On Switch 2, higher resolution, mouse support, and 12‑player sessions make New Horizons a more streamlined creative tool and a livelier social space. If you have been waiting for a reason to revisit your island, this update provides structure, capacity, and co‑op tools to do it your way.
