Nintendo has reopened trial access for its subscription service, confirming a fresh 7-day Nintendo Switch Online period that can be redeemed again even by previous trial users. The company also outlined platform-specific updates for Nintendo Switch 2, including GameChat timing, and dated a new Animal Crossing: New Horizons feature. Expansion Pack details were reiterated, covering classic libraries and content access across supported platforms.
Trial is back: eligibility and what’s included
The free 7-day trial for Nintendo Switch Online is available again and can be redeemed once per account after January 12, 2026. Nintendo notes that not all benefits featured in promotional materials apply to the trial. The offer does not cover Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
During the trial window, players can use online features in supported titles, sample a library of 150+ classic games across Super NES, Game Boy, and NES, and access the Nintendo Music smart-device app. Example titles highlighted by Nintendo include Mario Kart World.
Nintendo Switch 2 focus: GameChat and online play
On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo emphasizes built-in GameChat for voice and in-game communication while playing together. The company states that GameChat is in an Open-Access Period until March 31, 2026; after that date, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required for GameChat. Featured multiplayer examples include Kirby Air Riders and Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Slumber Island update
Nintendo confirmed a free update dated January 15 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The update introduces Slumber Island, a new destination where players can visit, build, and decorate with friends and family. The feature is designed to extend cooperative play options for the community.

While the trial does not apply to the higher tier, Nintendo detailed what the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack currently includes. The company lists added classic catalogs and game content, with some items exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2:

- Game content access: DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2.
