Screamer Revives a 90S Icon on Xbox with Anime-Fueled Combat Racing
Milestone is bringing back Screamer on Xbox Series X|S, reimagining the 1995 PC racer with an anime aesthetic and dual-stick combat-driven driving. The studio positions the new Screamer as a blend of classic racing and action, powered by an Echo system that fuels offensive and defensive maneuvers on track. A story-led Tournament mode sits alongside arcade challenges and multiplayer. Full release lands on March 26, with Early Access starting March 23.
Game Modes trailer:

A 90S Racer, Reimagined
The original Screamer helped define mid-90s PC racing with cutting-edge visuals. Rather than a one-to-one remake, Milestone has reinterpreted the concept with an anime twist, nodding to 80s-90s anime and videogames. Story sequences are produced with Japanese studio Polygon Pictures, while the action unfolds in the neon world of Neo Rey. The team says it aimed for a careful balance between narrative and on-track gameplay.

The Tournament: Story-First Mode
The Tournament functions as Screamer’s story mode and introduces five teams entering a mysterious competition organized by the enigmatic Mr. A. Structured across episodes and chapters, it draws on classic JRPG inspirations, emphasizing character motivations beyond simply finishing first. The mode integrates the Echo system – the in-universe device that powers combat abilities – directly into progression and race scenarios.

Arcade Suite: Tweak Rules or Chase Scores
- Race! Configure race length, track and character, and adjust how much Echo is available. You can disable Echo for a traditional race or max it out for combat-heavy runs. Cars are grouped as leaders and members; race by class or run a free-for-all.
- Team Race Puts Echo mechanics front and center. Squads consist of one leader and up to two members (1-3 per team). Points are awarded for finishing positions and KOs, creating a hybrid of racing lines and brawling tactics.
- Score Challenge Inspired by fighting-game arcade ladders. Pick a character and a competition length, then accumulate points across events. A global leaderboard tracks results, and there are hidden challenges to discover.

Solo Skill Trials
- Overdrive Challenge Stay in Overdrive as long as possible; touching a wall ends the run instantly.
- Checkpoints Hit each gate within the time limit, which shrinks as you progress, demanding precision and Echo mastery.
- Time Trial Set the quickest three-lap time.

Multiplayer: Split-Screen and Online
Split-screen supports up to 4 players locally. Online, the Screamer Mixtape rotates playlists for quick casual sessions, and private lobbies let friends group up. A Ranked Team Race mode will arrive shortly after day one, adding a competitive ladder for team-based play.
Release and Availability
Screamer launches on Xbox Series X|S on March 26, with Early Access opening March 23. All modes are accessible from the start regardless of story progress, though the studio notes the Tournament remains the fastest route to unlock characters and tracks.
Release Schedule
For quick reference, the key dates and rollout details are summarized here. Early Access precedes the full launch by three days, and ranked multiplayer arrives soon after day one.
Why It Matters
Screamer pairs racing fundamentals with combat depth, giving players a choice between a story-driven path and arcade-first playlists. With local 4-player split-screen, online playlists, leaderboards and a ranked team league coming soon, it offers multiple ways to compete when it lands in late March.
